5 Potent Essential Oils for Better Mental Focus

Essential oils have gained popularity over the past several years, and for good reason. Their potent powers provide so many amazing benefits…including helping us to sleep better, fight acne, ease muscles aches, strengthen the immune system, and feel more energized just to name a few.

Essential oils offer a versatile and fascinating method of healing that has been practiced for thousands of years, each plant extract providing a myriad of unique natural health benefits.

For example, peppermint can be used to relieve nausea, lavender to calm anxiety, and tea tree oil to clear acne breakouts.

It’s important to note, however,  that some oils are so powerful in their therapeutic effects that they may have contraindications.  People who have high blood pressure, who are prone to seizures, and women who are pregnant are all advised to be consult a health care practitioner prior to using essential oils.

It’s safe to say that our lifestyles provide us with the challenge of constant distractions and multi-tasking.  Our always accessible electronic devices keep us connected real-time…vulnerable and easily distracted with incoming alerts and messages. Have you ever been sitting at your desk struggling to stay focused on the task in front of you long enough to complete it? Sometimes you may even get so distracted that you forget what task you were working on the first place!

This is certainly not the way to produce your best work…nor the way to complete it timely!

There are several essential oils that can help keep your mind grounded and focused, clearing mental clutter and allowing you to finish tasks more quickly and efficiently.

Here are a few of my favorites:

5 Potent Essential Oils for Better Mental Focus
  1. Basil
Wonderful for mental clarity and focus. It is also incredible for headaches, helps with digestion and clears the sinuses. It is best used in a diffuser or combined with a carrier oil if used on the skin. It is also fabulous to blend with other oils, particularly Peppermint and Rosemary.

  2. Spearmint.
This minty-fresh scent helps open up the nasal channels, awakens the senses, and sharpens the mind. It is wonderful to use on its own, or blended with Peppermint for an extra focal effect.

  3. Rosemary
Rosemary has a grounding and earthy element that brings the mind back into focus. It’s also wonderful to strengthen the immune system and great in a carrier oil to massage on the scalp and revive hair follicles. For an added effect, combine it with Lemon or Lavender.

  4. Lime
This stimulating and pungent oil is not only effective in fighting viruses and bacteria, it’s also fantastic for bringing the mind back into focus. To awaken stimulate the mind even more, it’s awesome to combine with Lemon or Bergamot.

  5. Sandalwood
This earthy and sweet smelling oil is extracted from a now vulnerable plant. When purchasing, ensure it’s from Australia where it’s planted in designated bunches to ensure its preservation. Sandalwood has been used for thousands of years as a calming and centering extract. It’s also very effective as an anti-inflammatory. It’s fantastic blended with other oils such as Lavender or Ylang Ylang.

Essential oils are best used topically when blended with a carrier oil such as Jojoba, Olive, or Coconut.

You can also mix a few drops with water in a diffuser that provide a wonderful, aromatic mist into the air around you for hours.

Two of my favorite places for purchasing both essential oils and carrier oils are Starwest Botanicals and Star Essences. Both companies offer high quality, pure oils at a very affordable price.

Be extremely cautious applying essential oils directly to the skin without a carrier oil, as the super potent botanicals can often be too strong for direct contact.
